Box office Friday: Verity ~$32M pace; Cruise’s Digger ~$10M

Deadline’s Friday PM read: Amazon MGM’s Verity (Colleen Hoover; Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett) is pacing toward a ~$32 million–plus weekend open after about $14.5 million Friday including $4.5 million in previews, across 3,510 sites. Tom Cruise’s Digger is tracking near $10 million at 3,321 theaters, his lowest North American opening in 19 years (Lions for Lambs, 2007), with about $1.2 million in previews. The soft start lands against Warner Bros. studio-chief exit context for Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.

Holdovers cooled hard: Resident Evil about $11.5 million (−50%), Heart of the Beast about $10.3 million (−49%), Primetime about $7.6 million (−60%), Forgotten Island about $6.5 million, and Endgame Encore about $6 million (−81%). Spooky-season book-club thriller is the clear multiplex pick over a $160 million Cruise satire on opening Friday.
