Thursday afternoon previews start at 2 p.m. for Sony and Constantin’s Resident Evil reboot from Zach Cregger (Weapons). Deadline’s preview has it tracking roughly $40–50 million domestically and about $80 million worldwide on the high end, enough to top the franchise’s prior domestic open (Afterlife’s $26.6M) and challenge Cregger’s Weapons start.
Critics are unusually kind for this IP: the reboot sits at about 96% certified fresh, a sharp break from prior Resident Evil scores. The $75M production is booked at about 3,000 locations. Also opening wide: Vertical’s The Weight (Ethan Hawke, Russell Crowe) and Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom. Practical Magic 2 is expected to hold in the $12–15M range after last weekend’s soft $30M crown.
