Above the fold

Executive summary

  • Shorter Denver days make morning outdoor light the highest-leverage sleep fix: 10–20 minutes soon after waking, even on cloudy Sunday mornings, helps anchor circadian timing before clocks fall back next month.
  • UC San Diego researchers report the first randomized-trial signal that semaglutide slowed several epigenetic aging clocks (about 9% on DunedinPACE) in adults with HIV-associated lipohypertrophy. Early, specific cohort, not a DIY longevity protocol.
  • Box office: Avengers: Endgame Encore is pacing ~$26M at No. 1; Resident Evil holds ~$23.5M in week two; Primetime and Heart of the Beast fight around $20M. Couch picks if you skipped yesterday: Backrooms (Max), Tuner (Paramount+), Siren doc.
  • Denver Sunday: Firefly Fall Market still free at the Design District (10 a.m.–4 p.m.), Fall Fest with adoptable puppies at Moodswing (noon–5), Maria Chávez turntablism at Clyfford Still (2–5), then Broncos–Rams on the McGregor Square LED or Jungle at Red Rocks.

Sleep & circadian

Fall light is already rewriting your Sundays. Meet it outside.

As September light shortens across the Front Range, circadian researchers keep pointing to the same cheap fix: morning outdoor light. Sleep clinicians talking to Tom’s Guide and fall-fatigue explainers note that weaker daylight and darker mornings can nudge melatonin earlier, leave daytime alertness flatter, and make evening screens feel later than the clock says. Natural light, even through clouds, is a stronger zeitgeber than most indoor lighting.

The weekend move is small. Within about an hour of waking, step outside for 10–20 minutes with coffee or a short walk. Keep wake time roughly consistent even if bedtime drifts. Dim household lights in the last hour before sleep and leave the big circadian experiment for November’s clock change, when shifting bedtime 10–15 minutes earlier over a few nights beats an abrupt one-hour jump. No new gadget required unless mornings are pitch-dark and a sunrise lamp helps you get up.

Longevity science

Semaglutide slowed epigenetic aging clocks in a randomized HIV trial

A UC San Diego–led post hoc analysis in Nature Communications looked at DNA methylation clocks from a 32-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2b trial of weekly semaglutide in adults with HIV-associated lipohypertrophy (semaglutide n ≈ 45; placebo n ≈ 39). Versus placebo, semaglutide was associated with slower epigenetic aging across several second- and third-generation clocks, including about a 9% slower pace on DunedinPACE and multi-year reductions on PhenoAge and PCGrimAge. Systems clocks tied to inflammation, brain, and heart moved in the same direction.

Lead voices are careful: this is not proof the drug reverses aging, the cohort and 32-week window limit generalizability, and larger prospective trials are needed. Author Michael Corley’s line is the right headline tone: a signal that some aging-linked biological processes may slow, not a younger-you promise. Treat this as early geroscience evidence worth tracking, not a weekend prescription. Lifestyle levers (sleep, movement, metabolic health) remain the open, controllable stack while the field sorts dosing, durability, and who might benefit.

Theatrical

Sunday multiplex: Endgame Encore holds No. 1 in a four-way pile-up

Industry estimates heading into Sunday have Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame Encore pacing around $26 million for the Friday–Sunday frame from about 3,060 theaters, after an $11.2 million Friday that included Thursday previews. The re-release adds a Doomsday tease ahead of December and should push Endgame’s domestic lifetime toward the mid-$880 millions.

Sony’s Resident Evil reboot is holding second near $23.5 million in weekend two (roughly a 60% drop) on its way past $100 million domestic. A24’s Primetime (Robert Pattinson) and Paramount’s Heart of the Beast (Brad Pitt and a German shepherd) are neck-and-neck around $20–20.5 million, with DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island further back near $11.5 million. If you only buy one ticket today, Encore is the nostalgia-plus-tease play; Primetime is the critics’ conversation; Beast is the crowd-pleaser with a dog.

Streaming

If the couch wins: Backrooms, Tuner, and a deaf bodybuilding doc

HBO Max now has Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, the year’s surprise horror hit with Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture-store owner pulled into a liminal maze, Renate Reinsve searching, and plenty of claustrophobic dread. Paramount+ has Tuner, Daniel Roher’s lean crime thriller about a hyperacusic apprentice piano tuner (Leo Woodall) whose hearing becomes a safecracking skill, with Dustin Hoffman as mentor; critics are in the mid-90s on Rotten Tomatoes.

Quieter options: Irene Taylor’s Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie on Max profiles the deaf bodybuilder with Marlee Matlin among the voices, and Netflix’s Unabomber (Jacob Tremblay, Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley) is there if true crime is the mood. Yesterday’s comfort stack still stands if you have not started: The Love Hypothesis on Prime, Toy Story 5 on Disney+, Brothers on Apple TV. Sunday rule: one scary, one clever, or one soft, not all three.

Denver

Denver Sunday: makers, puppies, Still Museum sound, then football or Red Rocks

Daylight plan, low friction. Firefly Handmade’s Fall Market is still free today, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., in the Denver Design District lot in front of Rebel Bread (675 S. Broadway): local makers, pup-friendly, easy light-rail access. Overlap option from noon to 5 p.m.: Moodswing’s second annual Fall Fest (3625 E. 48th Ave.) with local vendors and adoptable puppies. Culture slot: turntablist Maria Chávez performs live with her Still in Sound interpretations at the Clyfford Still Museum, 2–5 p.m., short sets at the top of each hour, included with admission.

Evening forks. Free Broncos–Rams watch party at McGregor Square puts Sunday Night Football on the 66-foot LED with a plaza DJ; kickoff is 6:20 p.m. MT. Or head to Morrison for Jungle with Rio Kosta at Red Rocks, 7:30 p.m. (tickets run steep). Stack makers or museum by afternoon, then choose sports plaza or amphitheater.

Weekend rhythm

Soft landing: one walk, one screen, one early night

Weekends tend to overstuff. A simpler Sunday from the research above: morning outdoor light (or a short neighborhood loop), one intentional watch instead of three half-started ones, and an earlier wind-down before the workweek. If you already hit Firefly or Highland Games yesterday, treat today as recovery with optional Broncos noise in the background rather than another destination hunt.

Colorado tip for the shoulder season: layers for Design District sun and Red Rocks chill, a water bottle for altitude, and a hard stop so Monday does not start from a sleep debt.
